請問The plane was stopping at Gate 5.

我上禮拜在書店買了一本英文文法書
書名:朗*英*文*全*
作者:石*昭*

我目前看到第3章  動詞與時態(現在進行式....等)
有幾個問題我不太懂想請教各位高手

(1)The  plane  was  stopping  at  Gate  5.
      飛機正要停靠在第5號閘門
=>這裡為啥要用was呢?(飛機正在停靠應該是進行式吧?)

(2)We  were  on  the  point  of  giving  up  the  game.
      我們眼看就要放棄比賽
=>這裡為啥要用were呢?(比賽不是正在進行嗎?)

(3)They  were  about  to  leave  their  house  when 
      it    began  to  rain.
=>這句一定要用過去式嗎?不能用現在式嗎?我不能用are 
      和begin嗎?是不是因為有when,所以是過去式?

(4)I  was  on  the  point  of  going  to  bed  when 
      someone  knocked  at  the  door.   
=>這句一定要用過去式嗎?不能用現在式嗎?我不能用am 
      和knock嗎?是不是因為有when,所以是過去式?

be  about  to  .../be  on  the  point  of  V-ing  是[即將要~],表示隨後馬上會發生的事
