Hegel’s earliest (unpublished) essays, in addition to being blasphemous, were surprisingly easy to read. The style was crisp, concrete, and ironic. There was a noteworthy absence of jargon and obscurity. There was no attempt, in other words, to imitate Kant and the new academic style. But it seemed that the way to philosophical success was to imitate Kant—not his genius, or even his ideas, but his ponderous, sometimes tortured, style. Around 1800 Hegel decided that he, too, would like to reenter university life, and so he adopted the obfuscating style for which he has since become famous. With Kant, philosophy had become resolutely an academic. (It has never recovered.)
